Tyler

Tyler’s Song, from Steven Storey’s sophomore album One Way Street to be released next month, was written for a child that has a tough time expressing himself sometimes. Tyler, Steven’s godson, is Autistic. Steven’s been there to watch Tyler and his sister grow up, and how their family has grown because of services that support Autistic children and their parents.

As so many services in the Sacramento region have lost their funding, and as a result of having been so personally touched by his experiences with Tyler’s family, Steven Storey will donate 10% of all album sales (or 100% sales of Tyler’s Song) to Davis Unified School Districts Special Education Program, in Davis, CA. As a program that seeks to understand more completely many kinds of children in need of Special Education, they are able to focus on how an Autistic mind works in order to guide a child through the age of 18, working to help each person to independence and self-sufficiency. Steven chose this program not only because they’ve helped Tyler and his family so much, but also because he believes that services that help families affected by Autism directly are extremely important to the community. It’s been Tyler and his family’s lifeline for the past 10 years.

Tyler’s song, made of introspective, heartfelt lyrics aims to express a message for Tyler’s family, from what Steven Storey imagines might be happening from Tyler’s perspective. It’s an encouragement to his sister, mom and dad, to keep their faith that he will grow; appreciation for all they do to help, and how he seems to see the world so differently. In one verse, it expresses what could be Tyler’s frustration, looking out at the world and people “so different from me.” So much about Autism is yet to be understood, but Steven Storey taps into what could be a common struggle inside the mind of a young, Autistic child trying to find his way.

Steven Storey has been a major contributor to the Sacramento music community for 25 years, on-stage and behind the scenes.
